This painting, Yam seed Dreaming is by Aboriginal artist, Anna Pitjara. She is a Utopia woman from the eastern desert region in Australia. She uses very fine dot painting to highlight her story. This painting by Anna Pitjara shows where women collect Yams on country as the Yams are a very important part of the desert diet and provide a good source of protein. Anna paints with intricate dot work using a small paint bottle, carefully dotting the tracks and outlines of the areal view of country. Anna Pitjara’s family also paint the bush food and medicine stories important to the people living in this community and other desert areas in Australia.

The Bush yam dreaming stories Anna Pitjara paints are stories of which she has custody of, rather than ownership. The very fine white dots throughout her paintings represent the Yam seeds and the darker “valleys” represent the water courses that flow through her land.

Anna Pitjara was taught to paint by her cousin Gloria Petyarre.  Her Aunt was well known artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye.

Utopia is a community located about 300 kilometers north east of Alice Springs. The community has produced one of the most well known and highest price achieving indigenous artists, Emily Kame Kngwarreye.
