Pura (bush tomato) as featured in Yinarupa Nangala’s paintings.
Yinarupa Nangala has worked with Gannon House Gallery for fifteen years. She began painting for Papunya Tula artists corporation in 1996. Her father, Anatjari Tjampitjina, was one of the founding members. She now lives in Kiwikurra and since 2001 has painted for a select few reputable dealers.
Her paintings are aerial views of the landscape at Mukula near Juniper Well. The line work, often in black, details the areas where women gathered a variety of bush foods. The food includes kampurarrpa berries (desert raisin) and pura (bush tomato, pictured above) from the Solanum chipppendalci plant. After she has painted the line work she completes the painstaking process of slightly obscuring the story by covering the work with pale dots.
In 2014 she was selected as a finalist for the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. This painting was shown in the Wynne Prize exhibition and was later displayed in entry foyer of the AGNSW.
After a break over the last year we are excited to see some new work by Yinarupa Nangala due to arrive in the gallery by the end of the week. We have also been fortunate enough to add some new paintings to our “Three Brothers Exhibition”. Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri has been busy over the last few months but you will see some new work next week. We have commissioned a series of smaller works and he is now painting some larger pieces due in the coming months.
